Amelia started her first year of school this year – she had Junior Preschool on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:15 to 11:00. We were a little skeptical about how she’d like it – since she wasn’t the greatest listener (at least at home), so we weren’t sure how much she would listen at school.
It turns out we had nothing to worry about. Despite being towards the younger half of her class of 17, she did great. She listened; she played great with the other kids and she even learned how to write her name, which she couldn’t even spell at the beginning of the year. She loved going to school and she never missed an opportunity to say hi to her teacher (Julie) when she saw her at church, a basketball game or anywhere around town. She was so in love, that she’d get out of her seat and walk by herself all the way over to say hi. This from a kid who’s nervous about taking 2 steps away from us virtually anywhere.
We had her parent teacher conference back at the end of February and we were more than pleasantly surprised at how it went. Especially the part about “I listen attentively and follow directions”, but she’s made great strides in that area this year. Here was her teacher’s free comments from the conference:
“Amelia has very good cognitive and fine motor skills. She listens well and seems to enjoy music. Amelia like free play. She often plays in the kitchen or with Barbies. Amelia never chooses art during free play and has to be asked to do art or play a game. She willingly does what she is asked.”
She has definitely gotten more into music these days – I didn’t know if she’d be much of a singer since her sister fills that bill quite a bit and she hadn’t been doing much. It turns out that she likes to sing, but she usually does it when she’s excited or when she’s riding her bike. If you ask her to sing, you probably won’t see it.
She finished up school last week and is very sad that she can’t get to see Julie for a little while. She can’t wait until fall for Senior Preschool – we’re going to have her attend the 3 day class that runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the afternoons.
There she is on the first day of school
Now here she is at the end off school showing off her musical interest.
