I’ve been out of the habit of blogging again, so I need to get back to it. My vast audience (hi Becky) has missed out on summaries of our Disney trip, a dance recital, some conferences and a getaway weekend with my family. I like having the history out here of what’s been done and I really liked back in the early days when I’d use the blog to pontificate on something that’s going on.
I’m having trouble keeping up with the whole digital world. I find myself wondering if I should post a blog post here, put a video on YouTube, upload pictures to Facebook or tweet the latest happenings on Twitter. In the end, I wind up in analysis paralysis and do nothing.
Facebook has led me to waste countless hours trying to figure out if a girl I knew in high school and haven’t seen in 20 years is friends with anyone else I should know. I invariably want to see a picture of everyone to see what they look like, whether they’re married and have kids and where they work and live. On some profiles it’s not obvious, so then I have to look through pictures to figure it out. When you have 200 friends you never talk to and barely remember, this takes a long time.
I got myself on Twitter (http://twitter.com/ericnewell), because it seemed like the thing to do. When we were in New York last year on vacation, I thought it would be cool to use my phone to tweet updates on what we’re doing. After three tweets I realized, who in the world is actually going to see what I’m tweeting. I’m pretty sure the only people who would really care (my parents and family) are not sitting at the computer refreshing my Twitter page to see what’s going on. So I dropped that experiment pretty quickly. I can see why celebrities and newspaper writers use it, it makes sense to announce if you’re going on a show or if you have new content up. I just can’t figure out how it would be relevant for me.
I missed out on the /ericnewell virtual directory on LinkedIn, maybe that’s why I haven’t received multiple job offers yet. I must say though, I have used it when we’ve hired people on my team to do some checking in.
In addition to all those sites, I’m also trying to keep up with my Lulu store page, my YouTube site and my iLike music store. I’m starting to feel like I need an intern just to keep me up-to-date online.
