Floods and Other Misc

Boy, it’s been a long time since I’ve written on my blog.  I guess I’ve fallen out of the habit between getting started on Facebook and studying up for Fantasy Baseball (yes, I am a huge dork).

The Flood waters are really coming up here – I can’t believe how many roads are closed.  You can basically take the Interstate or don’t leave your house.  Even the Interstate is closed in North Dakota both South and West of Fargo.  We’re fine here in Barnesville – we didn’t flood back in ’97 and shouldn’t flood unless we get a ridiculous amount of rain.  There’s one small stream that flows through town, but it’s a ways from us, and we’re a few feet higher than it.

Work has been really good about letting us go help, so I went out Monday afternoon for some serious sandbag stacking and Becky was out all day today sandbagging and filling sandbags at the FargoDome.  I’m planning to work the sandbags all day tomorrow, so hopefully my back doesn’t go out.  Good thing I have a chiropractor appointment at the end of the day.

Hopefully we’ll get lucky enough so that the river stays under 39 feet.  When I was at my friends house sandbagging on Monday, we were trying to sandbag up beyond 41 feet just to be sure.  They live on a creek (Rose Creek) and the water was still a ways away, but it went up 4 feet during the day.  I’ll try to take some pictures tomorrow so I can capture the scene – it’s amazing how many people are out helping (especially all the kids – I was surrounded by high schoolers on Monday).

On the family side, things are going well.  We’ve been in a year long struggle with Amelia to get potty-trained, and she did well today – no accidents outside of nap time.  If we can just have that consistently, we’d be thrilled.  Katie is doing great as usual – we’re even working on her reading now – I think by the end of the summer she’ll be able to read some basic stuff on her own.  The girls have enjoyed the switch in day cares, and it’s been good for us too, because now we can go in 30 minutes later and stay until 5 – this lets the girls sleep in 30 more minutes in the morning – and me too.

One funny story – today we were leaving day care and Amelia saw a puddle that was about 18" across.  She studied it for a moment and somehow thought she could jump over it.  She jumped as high as she could and landed 2 inches into the puddle and got all wet.  Even though her pants were soaked, I had to laugh.
