Potato Days Whist Tournament 2008

Today was the 2008 version of the Potato Days Whist Tournament.  For the rules and processes, you can check out my 2006 or 2007 entry.  Looking back at the scores from the last few years, it looks like I’m moving in the right direction.  I finished in an official tie for 5th with 48 points this year and I gave up 29.  That all sounded pretty good until Uggie blew the field out of the water with a score of 68 points to finish first.  Becky had a real rough year coming in at 20 points.  My mom played for the first time and did great – she won every match and finished with 52 points to earn 4th place and a gigantic $4 cash prize.  My dad, Becky’s grandma, Uggie’s dad and our friend Kelly all played in the tournament as well.

I had one fun hand in the tournament – I had A4 diamonds, AQ clubs, AK9 hearts and AKQ764 spades.  I took the first 11 tricks in that hand.  It was one of the two times I ended up going high all day.  I actually kept stats on every hand so I could see what I had to work with.  I’m pretty happy with my score considering I didn’t have much for cards – my team didn’t go high until the 14th hand I played and only 4 times total.

After the tourney we played some more cards as the ladies went shopping downtown.  We enjoyed a meal of chicken kabobs, corn, potatoes and my mom’s now famous salad for dinner.  It was a fun night of hanging out with friends and family.
