Geography Quiz

I like to fahion myself a geography expert (or nerd, as most people call it), so when the opportunity to take part in geography trivia on the cruise, I wasn’t going to miss it.  The actual trivia session turned into a bit of a fiasco as it took over an hour to ask 12 questions.  The leader decided she would give an extra half point if you answered the question before you got the multiple choice options, which meant she had to walk all over the room after every question.

Here are the questions with my answer, the right answer, and my problem with each question (as you might have guessed I didn’t win – otherwise I would’ve shut up)
  1. What is the largest lake in the world?  I tried to ask the leader if she meant the largest inland body of water or lake.  She said it didn’t matter, which of course it does.  The largest lake is Lake Superior, which was my answer, but according to her the answer was the Caspian Sea which is the largest inland body of water, but since it’s salt-water, it’s referred to as a sea
  2. What is the largest lake in South America?  Lake Titicaca
  3. What is the longest river in the world?  The Nile
  4. In which ocean can you find Iceland?  Atlantic – I wasn’t sure why anyone waited for the 4 multiple choice options since there are only 4 oceans
  5. In which country can you find the following rivers – Lena, Irtysh and some other one?  Russia
  6. Into which body of water does the Rio Grande empty?  Gulf of Mexico
  7. Lake Nasser, Lake Mead and two other lakes are what?  I answered the result of damned rivers, which was correct, but she said I was wrong because that’s not what her paper said.  The correct answer is man made, which of course, lakes coming from damned rivers are.
  8. What is the tallest waterfall in the world?  I answered Victoria Falls and the correct answer was Angel Falls.  I legitimately missed that one, and have no beef.
  9. What is the largest lake within the US borders?  Lake Michigan
  10. In which ocean lies the deepest trench in the world?  Pacific – she wouldn’t give me extra credit for knowing it was the Mariana Trench
  11. What is the capital of Australia?  Canberra
  12. What is the official language of Romania?  Romanian
  13. (3 pts) What is the trivia director’s name?  Victoria (Becky knew this one, I hadn’t paid attention)
  14. (2 pts) What is the trivia director’s home town?  No idea – answer – Hollywood

So I ended up in second place because of the disputed questions and the fact that I didn’t look at her name tag when she first came in to know where she was from.

I did a little research on the waterfalls so I can have that clear in my mind for the next cruise we take 10 years from now.  Angel Falls is located in a very remote area of Venezuela and wasn’t discovered by westerners until 1937.  Victoria Falls is nowhere close to the tallest waterfall; however it is sometimes erroneously considered the largest waterfall in terms of volume.  It is the widest waterwall, if that counts for anything.
