Today marked the last day of Junior Pre-school for the 4 year olds in town. Katie has made it through one grade! If she goes to college, that only leaves 18 more years of school. She’ll be in Senior Preschool next fall, so things will be getting pretty serious then.
She really enjoyed the year and her teachers, Julie and Gloria. She talks about them glowingly and wants to follow them around everywhere they go. Her school day started by getting on the bus from day care at 8:04 and arriving at the gym. She’d then walk through the gym/dining hall as breakfast was being torn down to her room in the high school next to the ag department. She would hang up her coat and then she could decide if she wanted to go to the blue, red or yellow table. One was fun crafts, one for coloring and one for puzzles (I don’t remember which was which, but Katie could tell you instantly). They also enjoyed snack time and whoever brought the snack was the "leader" for the day. They did a lot of art projects and worked on writing their names.
There were about 17 kids total in class and they seemed to be a good group. Katie got along with them all and developed some friendships, that will probably last for the next 14 years.
We received her assessment today and the teacher said Katie did great. She is doing well in the four developmental areas they touch on – social/emotional, physical, cognitive and language. The teacher said she carries on conversations well with the teachers and other kids in the class. They had her do a self-portrait at the beginning of the year and compared it to one she did last week. It went from a few strands of red, brown and black hair to a full picture of herself with hair, eyes, a mouth, arms and legs.
I know it’s only junior preschool, but I’m very proud of her and looking forward to watching her through the entire school journey.
