I told a lot of people that my favorite time with Katie thus far was when she was between 18 months and 2 years when she was learning a new word every day, and every day we were surprised by whatever came out of her mouth. Amelia has just started to enter this phase now, and it’s just as fun as I remember it with Katie.
Some of her recent phrases are "Mia Do It", "Apple Juice" (that refers to any drink), and "Stop It". The most fun moment came tonight when we were playing Duck, Duck, Goose. To set it up, she’s been going around the table at dinner time lately and pointing to each of us and saying, "Mama", "Dada", "Katie" and "Mia". So she’s got the names down well, even though she had been calling herself something that sounded more like Katie for a while. During our game tonight, Katie got to be "the lady" first (that’s the person who taps the heads) and she picked Becky and then Becky picked Amelia. When it was Amelia turn she did this – tapping me on the head, "Dada Duck", tapping Becky "Mama Duck", tapping Katie "Katie Duck", then she tapped her own head and said "Mia Duck". It was hilarious.
Another big milestone for Amelia happened this week. We have been working on her potty training for a couple weeks now. Thus far she likes to go potty, she just doesn’t do anything when she gets on there. When we put her on the potty, she looks at us and says "All Done". So when she had her first properly timed poop on the potty this week, it was a big deal. On Wednesday night I took the girls to the library after supper, as we usually do once every couple weeks. We had just gotten there and started coloring when Amelia started to get "the look" like she was working on something. So I grabbed her as fast as I could and ran her back to the bathroom. I was luckily able to get her pants pulled down just in time for it to come out on the potty. I don’t think she realized what had happened even with all the high-fives I was giving her. I was so excited I called Becky even though I’d just left home two minutes ago. We celebrated afterwards with ice cream. Katie now thinks it’s pretty cool that she gets candy or ice cream for helping Amelia on the potty, so she’s doing anything she can to help out the cause. There haven’t been any more successful episodes since that one yet, but hopefully they will be coming soon.
