It turned out to be a nice, relaxing Labor Day Weekend. We took it easy and didn’t do too much, but managed to stay busy enough and get the house cleaned up. We also got the chance to introduce Katie to several different sports and sporting events.
Friday night I took Katie to her first high school football game as we went to watch the local team. I think that will be her last football game of the year as well. She did fine for the first 5-6 minutes, but then she used the "I got to go potty, daddy" excuse to get us down to the concessions stand. She knows I won’t call her bluff on the potty excuse, so we made our way to the concessions and came back with some gummy worms. She complained that she didn’t get enough (5) and then she just got increasingly restless. The stands were pretty full at the time, so there wasn’t a lot of room for her to roam. That didn’t stop her from trying, so she ended up kicking the people in front of us in the back and kicking me in the face at one point. So I decided that was enough and we went home. In thinking about it, next time we go, we’ll either have to walk around the field, bring a friend to play with or just go to an open area where she has room to run around.
On Sunday we went down to my parents and did some swimming for probably the last time this year. Due to the semi-drought this summer, the water level has gone down about 18 inches and now Katie can stand up all the way to the end of the talk. She had a great time swimming once she got over her initial fear of standing up in the water. And unlike other times we’ve swum, I didn’t have to hold her the whole time, so we could stay out there longer without my back going out. We’ll have to see about getting her into swimming lessons, because she loves to be in the water.
On Monday morning, we didn’t have much going out, so I thought it would be a good time to get out and try golfing. Katie and I headed out and it went as well as I could possibly imagine. We rented a cart (which I figured was a necessity – I can’t see making her walk the whole 9 holes) and she loved hanging out in the cart and occasionally getting the chance to drive. She also loved figuring out the numbers – she kept asking me where the flags were for each hole as we’d come up to the teebox. I’d say "it’s very far away, daddy has to hit it really far", and she’d say, "we’ll have to take the cart there." I think we had that exact discussion on every hole. I explained to her how the sign on each hole said what hole number it was, how many times daddy was supposed to hit the ball, and how far away it was. She had much more confidence in my game than I, because when I’d say, "daddy’s only supposed to hit it 4 times, do you think I can do that", she would say "Yeah". I only validated her confidence 3 times on the round. She had fun hitting the ball in the hole on the green, so I just need to get her her own putter, and I think we can do this again.
