Outside project

Whenever I need to convince Katie to help with something, I call it a "project."  She loves to help with pretty much any kind of project – so we have lots of projects around the house.  Over the past few weekends, we’ve been working on some real projects.  We are desperately trying to get our lawn to look good, so we’ve tackled three big projects – putting up a fence to conceal our utilities on the south end and to add interest to the northeast corner, planting trees and planting flowers/bushes throughout the yard.

We finished the fence about three weeks ago after a grueling weekend of mixing concrete, digging holes (finding enormous rocks) and fending off girls.  Last weekend we put in three poplars and an ash to go with our 2 maples and American Linden trees in already in our yard.  This weekend’s task was to plant flowers throughout the yard and take the grass we dug up to fix some areas that are really bad.  Becky’s mom and grandma came for the party and brought with them some flowers including an endless supply of pionies.  While we worked on Friday they positioned all the flowers and bought extra ones.

The biggest portion of the project was to create a new bed in the front of our house.  Becky’s mom did pretty much all the dirt work (which was considerable) and Becky and her grandma planted flowers when it was done and planted the rest around the house.  My job was to take the good dirt from the front of the house and put it in the back in a patch where grass wasn’t growing at all.  We were able to get the project done, and the results can be seen on the pictures I uploaded this morning.

Maybe all this means we can take a weekend off of big landscaping projects and focus on Katie’s favorite project – the watering the flowers project.
